How many times have you heard the phrase…

“It’s in their DNA.”

DNA is both simple and complicated, always between… Nature AND Nurture

For example, when it comes to eye color, the DNA is very simple, as eye color is determined by Nature.

100% Nature AND 0% Nurture

But, as we move on to height, the DNA formula becomes a little more complicated, as it involves Nature and Nurture.

80% Nature AND 20% Nurture
(sleep and nutrition)

Based on the study “Meta-analysis of the heritability of human traits based on fifty years of twin studies” (Journal of Nature Genetics), the meta-analysis of 2,748 studies involving more than 14.5 million pairs of twins found that the average nature-and-nurture influence on most human traits is nearly balanced, with a simple split of 49% nature and 51% nurture. The analysis also showed that heritability estimates for muscle development and use range from a more complicated split of 30-85% genetic influence (nature) and 15-70% environmental influence (nurture).

And even more complicated…

Myth: Strength is associated with muscle mass.

Human Truth: Bigger muscles do not equate to bigger strength.

“Its in your DNA.”
