Given the limitations of biological and behavioral evolution, our bodies are designed to achieve and maintain survival status with as little energy as possible. This is known as the principle of least effort, which is counterproductive to becoming the athlete you want to be.

When I was 29, I set out to break a world record. Moments before my first attempt in 1994, standing behind the blocks with one foot resting on the ground and one foot on the starting block, something unusual happened. I saw myself in the future, as if I had already broken more than 20 world records.
I took a breath and stepped up slowly. In the ready position, toes gripping the starting block, with one more nervous shake of an arm, I looked down the lane in front of me and saw my future. The gun went off, and I finished the race, breaking the world record. My Future Me smiled and whispered, “19 to go.”
I love my sport and have continued to set world records over the years, but on my 41st birthday, I made a promise. “I will take care of you now,” I told my Future Me, knowing that intentionality today would mean a better future for myself and for my family. Over the last 25 years, I have set 20 Masters Swimming world records. Some races were easy: breaking records with seconds to spare, and some races were close: breaking them within hundredths of a second. And...some races were hard, missing them by hundredths of a second.
2015 was a particularly difficult year. Most of my attempts at world records were misses. I was at Canadian Masters Nationals and just when I wanted to quit and take the first plane home, my Future Me showed up. “You can’t do this! We made a deal! You will take care of me now, and I will take care of you in the future.” I continued on and set world record number 17. “Three more to go,” I told my Future Me.
Throughout my life, my Future Me shows up to guide and coach my choices. The choices I make now are the key to my overall future wellness. Take a look at the health of your Future You.
